Biography
Adrian graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from LaTrobe University in Victoria, Australia. He then conducted postgraduate research into the ecology of the big-bellied seahorse and obtained a BSc Honours degree from the University of Tasmania, Hobart, in 1994. After working in a number of roles for government marine fisheries research departments in Tasmania, Adrian spent some 8 years as an environmental consultant, undertaking baseline studies and environmental impact studies for government and industries such as mining, oil and gas. This work sent Adrian to all corners of the globe and was the beginning of his forays into deep-sea biology, undertaking studies in remote locations for several high-profile projects. After a successful consulting career, Adrian made the leap back into academia and complete a PhD. The University of Queensland is leading the Deep Ocean Australia Project and Adrian obtained a research scholarship to undertake a doctorate study into mesopelagic fishes as part of the project.
From Adrian
The sea is a great mystery to me. It is an environment to which humans are so ill-adapted and yet it is the place where I feel most human. I love being on, or in, the sea because it allows me the privilege of studying life in the ocean that has fascinated me for as long as I can remember.
