Biography
Holding a B.S. in electrical engineering from San Diego State University, Robert Elder worked with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography for approximately six years on their Deep Tow Project (a towed vehicle with sidescan sonar, cameras and other sensors), a precursor to the towed vehicles used for CATALYST 2. In 1987, he was hired by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the Deep Submergence Lab as an electrical engineer for the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Jason, soon becoming the lead electrical engineer responsible for the philosophical design and layout of a new vehicle. In 2007, Robert joined the REMUS 6000 team with WHOI, working on vehicles similar to those used during CATALYST 2, and he just finished as project manager in the development of a new 3,000 meter vehicle.
